136 years ago, our great-grandfather Franz Mistlbacher made his dream come true and founded the bakery in Klein-Pöchlarn. Even today, we bake here fresh bread, pastries, cakes and create special chocolate editions.
In the 1950s, my father August Mistlbacher took over the bakery in the third generation. He was also a passionate baker. His recipe for success was never to compromise on quality.
Johannes Mistlbacher continues the family tradition and takes over the bakery in Klein-Pöchlarn. "My home is the bakery, just like it was for my great-grandfather, grandfather and father. Baking is for me a sense of home and this feeling, that piece of home, I want to save for our customers. For all our bakery products we use only highest quality ingredients from the region."
We opend our first coffee house and pastry shop directly in the pedestrian zone of Melk, just below the baroque abbey. Immediately after the acquisition, we renovated. In an initial expansion phase, a novelty arose for the time: The first smoking and non-smoking are in a coffee house was set up. Later on, the display cases and furnishings were completely renewed.
It was time to develop our first chocolate praline and 1996 was the perfect year. Melk celebrated a very special anniversary, namely 1000 years of Babenberger in Austria. The first family members of the Babenberger´s lived already in Melk. They lived on the spot where the imposing baroque monastery of Melk is enthroned today. As a tribute to this event, we created the Babenberger praline. Tender milk-chocolate filled with a light apricot-marzipan filling.
Melk celebrated the 100th anniversary of the city elevation. This special event inspired us to the creation of the "Melker Taler". A small but fine nougat speciality, handmade with exquisite dark and milk chocolate.
The 90s were a very innovative time! We decided to bake the longest strudel ever. We kneaded, rolled, filled and baked. Of course, even back then it was very important to us to bake only with regional and natural ingredients. That´s how everything startet with the longest apricot kiss strudel. A 247,05 m strudel, that paralyzed the entire Melker pedestrian zone. Until today, we are still very proud of this world record and our entry into the Guiness Book of Records.
An insider tip and the perfect souvenir. But first more about the creation of this sweet homage to the city of Melk. The lower austria state exhibition was imminent and we wanted to contribute something very special to this celebration. So we startet to bake, to refine our recipes and this for hours. Our goal was to design and create a unique cake. The result was a chocolate-almond cake, filled with Wachauer apricot jam and covered by a fine couverture. At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, we were allowed to present our cake. The cake surprised and delighted. Spontaneously, the state governor of the time Dr. Erwin Pröll took over the sponsorship of our sweet speciality in presence of the Federal President Dr. Klestil and Abbot Burkhart Ellegast from Melk Abbey.
This summer was unique, because for the first time, the Sommerspiele Melk presented a world premier with "Parzival". A work commissioned by the new intentant and artist director Alexander Hauer. Each year, since 2002, we are able to create a dedicated praline for this stunning festivities. Visitors to the premiere can look forward to this delicate and limited special edition. Since then, the annual edition is also available for purchase at our coffeehouse in Melk and at the Wachauarena during the festival season.
We received a special award from Gault Millau twice. The "Golden Coffee Bean". The highest culinary award for coffee & pastry shops. This trophy was given to us for our pastry assortment and the special coffee quality, as well as the variety in its preparation methods.
It was time to think about another location for a new branch. A new local supply center has just been built in Klein-Pöchlarn, our home town, and we have found the perfect location for another branch here. Our bakery in the town center was too small and we decided to open not only a coffee house but also a bakery shop. Today, our café is very popular in the region. Probably because it is located next to the Danube Cycle Path and offers a great outdoor area with seating possibilities.
We recently opend our third coffee house and bakery shop. With a very similar concept to that in Klein-Pöchlarn, we were allowed to help design our branch when it was newly built. Right next to the "Lebensfreude" pharmacy, we have been welcoming our guests since summer 2020. Of course, we also offer fresh bread and pastries here every day.
There will certainly be a lot to report about the year 2021. In the meantime we would like to welcome you in Melk, Klein-Pöchlarn or Pöchlarn.
